In case you were wondering – Benjamin Hyrons is the name of a remarkable man who was sent to Van Dieman’s Land (now Tasmania) as a convict. He lived for a time in George Town, one of the oldest settlements in Australia, founded in 1805. There are several examples of early colonial buildings surviving in the town, and the oldest weatherboard structure remaining is Ben Hyrons Cottage. Ben Hyrons was transported to the colony for forgery. He served his time, received his ticket-of-leave and eventually a pardon. Ben became a very successful business man in early Van Dieman’s Land, owning a number of different hotels, the first theatre in Launceston, and several stage coach runs. Opposite his Cottage, in what is now Regent’s Square, stood a hotel where Ben Hyrons’ stage coaches would change horses. He built his Cottage here in the 1860s, and eventually returned here to spend his last years. Some talk of a ghost…

If you ever visit Tasmania, you can stay in Ben Hyron’s Cottage.

Our publishing company takes its inspiration from a resourceful man who overcame severe odds and embraced the new adventures that life threw his way.
